Forgotten Memories of Forgotten Lands/Road Widow's Son

by Cody Allen James

/
1.
He rides this open trail Red sand below his feet Casts a shadow There's a storm to the East The lightning it cracks Mountain's on his back Find shelter Or the wrath of God His eyes are open wide Be damned to call it quits Skin burns though it's freezing cold Forgotten memories of forgotten lands No water and my legs can't seem to stand Memories Memories Of forgotten lands Some folk will tell the tale Of the man from Nowhere Though as long as he makes it home The mud on my boots Red like the sand "Say that man he bears my name" Then some shots rang out Held more meaning at the time But became a echo for my life Forgotten memories of forgotten lands No water and my legs can't seem to stand Memories Memories Of forgotten times And forgotten men In forgotten lands
2.
The buzzards in the sky are all hoping that he dies And his home town behind him never crosses his mind He's not a man of God but he prays for death 'cause it's hot on this black top and he can't catch his breath The road widow's son never had any fun Nah he taught himself to shave, he learned to shoot a gun And he dropped out of school at the age of 16 'cause there's not much a road widow's son hasn't seen He wondered, he wondered oh where could he be "I'll find that old bastard if it's the death of me" So he polished his gun and sharpened his blade And readied the bed for the old man to lay The road widow's son never had any fun Nah he taught himself to shave, he learned to shoot a gun And he dropped out of school at the age of 16 'cause there's not much a road widow's son hasn't seen He thought of the nights that his Mama had cried He always knew he'd be the one to see him die When he finally saw him well sure he shed a tear 'cause it was like looking straight into a mirror The road widow's son never had any fun Nah he taught himself to shave, he learned to shoot a gun And he dropped out of school at the age of 16 'cause there's not much a road widow's son hasn't seen He saw that old man by the side of the road If he ever missed him well God it didn't show He thought about killin', he thought how he'd die But the far greater cruelty was to just pass him by The road widow's son never had any fun Nah he taught himself to shave, he learned to shoot a gun And he dropped out of school at the age of 16 'cause there's not much a road widow's son hasn't seen
